Student Life Drawing Exhibition
March 14 through April 14

Life Drawing is basic in the career of an art student as well as a skill-set to be constantly refined by the experienced artist.  On the west side of the Valley there are few if any places outside of the community colleges where one can go to study from the live model either with instruction or without. West Valley Art Museum is one of the few and has offered Life Drawing for nearly two years. Instructor George Palovich brings to the classes nearly fifty years of study and teaching and is presenting examples of his students and participants from the drop-in sessions at the Museum.   The exhibition shows a selection of media and techniques used in the Tuesday evening sessions ranging from delicate pencil work to ink and charcoal. There are rapid gesture drawings often done as a “warm-up” at the beginning of the sessions, contour drawings done as a blind drawing during which the  student cannot look at their paper while drawing and longer studies in charcoal using a “lift” method where the drawing is done on a charcoal toned paper and a kneadable eraser used to “lift” out the highlights. There is also one large pencil work by Palovich included in the show.   The show was selected by Palovich with an eye towards showing the various projects the participants are engaged in throughout the year. One drawing, by Janet Trisler, is of the skeleton often used in lessons on anatomy. Several works have the look of a portrait from studies of the head alone. Other attendees to the sessions included in the show are Jim McNeill, Bernie Carney, Diane Wise, Cindy Brozen and Sheri Lee.   Classes are $20 each, meeting Tuesdays from 6:30 to 9:00 pm. A list of the materials can be acquired by asking at the front desk at the Museum or emailing gpalovich@wvam.org. More information can be obtained by calling Mr. Palovich at the Museum before noon Monday through Friday at 623-972-0635.
