January 13, 2010
To our members, friends and colleagues:
Last Thursday, January 7, 2010, a general membership meeting was held to bring members up to date on your West Valley Art Museum.
The letters below mention this meeting and questions were answered by Dr. William Benz, now President of the Board of Trustees, (Dr. Bee Gatliff has resigned due to reasons of health), Mr. Richard Meese, Mr. Kirk Shroyer (of AOTA Investments) and George Palovich, former Curator of the Museum.
Please read the letters which explain the sale of the Museum building and future plans for the Museum. They were sent by mail to the membership a week before the meeting. There are still some financial obligations that the Museum must deal with in the coming months. The Board is working diligently with several very promising prospects for placing the Collection and resuming activities as a Museum, even though it will not have its own building.
It is more important than ever that everyone who cares about art in the West Valley continue to support the Museum. The Museum continues to collect, and donations of art in the areas of Ethnic Dress and Related Artifacts, International Fine Prints and Arizona Artists will continue to be accepted.
Please remember that not everything offered to the Museum will necessarily be accessioned. Some works may be sold to benefit the Museum and all gifts must have no restrictions. The West Valley Art Museum will loan works from its collection to other institutions for display.
Your West Valley Art Museum is alive (if not well), and continues to need your support.
Letters:
To our valued members, friends and community,
The West Valley Art Museum is planning to move. Due to insufficient funding to continue in the existing location, the Board of Trustees for the Museum voted earlier this month to sell the building and property.
This is a very emotional situation for our members, friends, and volunteers. The Museum has been struggling financially for the past several years. The funding sources for the museum have slowed to a fraction of the necessary amount to run the operation.
The Museum building and the property were scheduled to be sold at auction on December 9, 2009. The Board of Trustees worked diligently the first week of December with AOTA Investments, LLC (AOTA).The agreement between the Board of Trustees and AOTA includes: the initial purchase price to retire critical debt, interim bridge funding for the museum, and if the sale of the property is profitable for AOTA, then a portion of the net proceeds will be shared with the Museum. AOTA is giving the board and selected volunteers access to the Museum and time to make an organized move.
The art collection is protected and insured. Under the careful direction of George Palovich and other volunteers, the art is being prepared to be moved. The Board is investigating possible new locations. If you have any ideas on storage, or display opportunities for the collection, or office space, please contact us.
In addition to a continued commitment to cultural leadership to our long-term members, the Museum looks forward to also attracting younger members. Your suggestions associated with this are appreciated.
There will be a general membership meeting at the Museum on January 7, 2010 at 4:00 pm. The Museum Board and AOTA representatives will attend the meeting, and there will be opportunity for comment and questions. In part, we will be discussing the need for funding at this meeting. Some assets of the Museum can be sold and AOTA is helping with interim funding, but we will need additional monies to take care of past expenses and to assist with the move.
We are grateful to all of you who have supported the West Valley Art Museum over these past 30 years. It is with sadness that we close this chapter of the Museum's history. It is also with renewed vision and hope that we continue from here. You have the Board of Trustee's commitment to continue. We look to our members and friends for help at this time.
If you have immediate questions, comments, or contributions please call the Museum at 623.972.0635 or email George Palovich gpalovich@wvam.org
Sincerely,
Dr. Bee Gatliff, President of the Board of Trustees
